In this workshop, we explore the role of storytelling (broadly understood) in Indigenous knowledge. We also ask what the academic discipline of philosophy (and the philosophers therein) might gain from better understanding these practices. To that end, we ask questions such as: What is the function of storytelling in Indigenous knowledge? Do practices of storytelling necessarily clash with other (more dominant) knowledge practices? What would it take to reconcile the deep differences between them fairly? What would it take for the academic discipline to include (and enable) diverse methods of inquiry (such as storytelling)? What limits, if any, are there to how non-indigenous philosophers use Indigenous knowledge-making practices such as stories in their work? And, what ethical and trust-based issues arise at the intersections of Indigenous storytelling and mainstream scientific practice?

The workshop will take place in person in Hannover and via Webex; the workshop language is English.

Getting to the workshop

The workshop will take place on the campus of Leibniz University Hannover in room 001 (ground floor), building 1105, the building of the Exzellenzcluster PhoenixD. Click on the following link for the building location: Welfengarten 1A, 30167 Hannover, Germany.

Lunch

Lunch will be served in room C109 on the first floor of the Welfenschloss (university main building), building 1101, Welfengarten 1, 30167 Hannover. We will walk there together. See below for accessibility information.
All food is vegetarian or vegan. Most of the dishes are also gluten-free; a gluten-free side of rice is provided.

Accessibility

The building and workshop room are accessible and there is an accessible toilet. Lunch will take place in the Welfenschloss (1101 / university main building), which is also accessible and has an accessible toilet. We will provide closed captions for online participants.

Building 1105 (workshop location) is accessible and has an accessible toilet on the same floor. Follow the signs from the workshop room.

Building 1101 (university main building, lunch location) has three accessible restrooms on the ground floor (click here for a map). If you enter one of the two main entrances from the front of the building, you will find the nearest restroom to the left (on the hallway next to the Leibniz Shop). Follow the signs for elevators to the upper floors. From the conference rooms on the upper floors, you can take the elevator to the main floor to access this restroom.
